Another Eagle owl from my Czech trip this year.

November - Mute swans fighting

Mute swans fighting

I came across these swans fighting in lovely evening light. They had their necks intertwined and they were really going for it with their wings and beaks. for about ten minutes. After getting some good action shots it was becoming increasingly apparent that I had to split them up as I feared that this match could end in a fatality. One swan got the other one in the shallows and had its foot on the other one's neck and was clearly trying to drown it. After some prodding with the end of my long lens and a friend's tripod we managed to separate them and all ended well thankfully.

October - Red deer stag

Red deer stag

Every year in Autumn I like to visit the London Royal parks to photograph the deer rut. This year it has been exceptionally mild and I suspect that the does have not come into season as I have never seen the males so placid and chilled out. So not a lot of bellowing or sparring and no matings, so I had to make do with a nice portrait against the autumn colours for this month's image.

- Image taken with Canon 1Dx, 300mm f2.8 L IS lens, 1/2000 sec; f/2.8; ISO 400, No exposure compensation . Hand held.

September - Red Kite

Red kite in flight

I love photographing red kites in mid Wales at a couple of feeding stations as they are an awesome spectacle and challenging to photograph. This was my first outing with my Canon 1Dx shooting action.I achieved a far higher success rate than with any previous Canon camera. The thing I like most is that when an image appears to be in focus on the back of the camera it is usually critically sharp at 100% on the computer screen. At last, autofocus that really works!

- Image taken with Canon 1Dx, 500mm f4 L IS lens, plus 1.4x extender mkIII , 1/3200 sec; f/5.6; ISO 800, Exposure compensation plus 1/3 stop . Tripod and Wimberley head.

August - Puffin

Puffin

I've been sorting out some of my archived images recently and came across this nice classic puffin with sandeels that I took in the Farne Islands on my old 1DmkIII back in 2008.

- Image taken with Canon 1Dmk III, 100-400 f5.6L IS lens, 1/640sec, f8 Iso 200, Exposure compensation -2/3 stop . Tripod.

July - Rare butterflies

Small pearl-bordered fritillary

After several years of trying to capture images of this species I was successful in the Wyre Forest in Shropshire on a cool early morning. The butterfly is becoming increasingly rare due to the decline of coppicing which is essential for their foodplant (violet) to grow. Bad weather at critical times has also lead to decline. The butterfly now appears extinct in Kent and Surrey and is on a knife-edge in Sussex.

large blue butterfly

Large blue

The large blue became extinct in the UK in 1979 but has been reintroduced in to varios sites successfullly. This one is in Gloucestershire.

June - Bee orchid

Bee orchid

Bee orchid

It is the height of the orchid season now.I am startong to work through the species again using my long lens method for these close up shots. Instead of using a macro lens I like to use my 300mm telephoto fitted with an extension tube. This enables me to get closer than the bare lens permits and also blur the inevitable busy background.

May - Elephant hawk moth

Elephant hawk moth

I ran my moth trap for a couple of nights and was pleased to find this beautiful elephant hawk moth asleepinside it in the morning. It obligingly posed for some pictures before I transferred it to a safe place away from hungry birds.

- Image taken with Canon 1Dx with 180mm f3.5L macro lens 0.5 sec f22 Iso 100, manual focus in liveview, tripod and cable release.

Another shot of the same moth on a convenient tree trunk.

- Image taken with Canon 1Dx with 100mm f2.8L macro lens 1/13 sec f22 Iso 200, mirror lockup , manual focus in liveview, tripod and cable release. +1/3 exposure compensation.

April - Fox cubs

Fox cubs

I have discovered a fox den at the bottom of my garden which backs on to farmland. I have seen five cubs, and these two were the losers in a scrap for rights over a baby rabbit that the vixen had brought for them. The winner can be seen in the next image below.

- Image taken with Canon 1DmkIV, 500mm f4 IS lens , 1/1600 sec, f5.0 Iso 800, handheld.

March - Birds of Prey in the Czech Republic

Goshawk with hare

I took a flight to the Czech Republic in January to photograph birds of prey in snowy conditions.Unfortunately we had no snow but very grey, gloomy weather. However we photographed some sensational birds, thanks to Tatra Photography for a wonderful trip.

- Image taken with Canon 5DmkIII , 300mm f2.8L IS lens , 1/250th sec f5.6 Iso 800.

Eagle owl in flight

- Image taken with Canon 1DmkIV , 300mm f2.8L IS lens , 1/1600th sec f3.2 Iso 1000.

Boreal owl

This gorgeous owl was one of my favourite Czech birds. It is even smaller than a little owl.At least no snow meant that the beech leaves were still on the trees - giving a more autumnal appearance.

- Image taken with Canon 1DmkIV , 300mm f2.8L IS lens , 1/60th sec f3.5 Iso 500, +1/3 exposure compensation.

February - Brown hare

Hare at full gallop

I have good site for photographing hares using my car as a hide. They are pacifists apparently as I can never get them boxing, but this nice close gallop-past was a fair substitute to be going on with.

- Image taken with Canon 1DmkIV , 300mm f2.8L IS lens plus 1.4x converter, 1/200th sec f9, Iso 1600, +2/3 exposure compensation.

January - Collared doves in the snow

Collared doves in snow

It is hard to believe that this gentle, unassuming bird only reached the UK in 1953 and bred for the first time in 1956. It has been a great success story and can now be found almost everywhere. It came from subtropical Asia, and here it is in much colder climes.

- Image taken with Canon 1DmkIV , 300mm f2.8L IS lens plus 1.4x converter, 1/200th sec f9, Iso 1600, +2/3 exposure compensation.
